The Capoverdean music, with African and European influences, is the expression of the soul of people singing love, suffering, nostalgia, happiness and melancholy. Music is the symbol of Capoverdean identity and has become the embassador of the Capoverdean style in the world. Everybody is fashinated by the traditional sound and music has an enormous value spreading and promoting the culture of Cabo Verde. We cannot forget to mention the interpreter of mornas and caladeiras, the Queen of Capoverdean sound: Cesaria Evora, wit her sweet voice, her strong, yet melancholic tone, Cesaria seduces the world with the traditional Capoverdean sound. There are many more local artists, less famous, but excellent interpreters of the Creole music: Paulino Vieira, Tito Paris, Neves, o Mariza, Mendes Brothers, Simentera, Splash, Gill&Perfect o Ferro Gaita. All these artists contribute to spread the marvellous sound of Cabo Verde. But the list is longer and longer: Luis Morais, Bana, Chico Serra, Titina o Norberto Tavares, Os Tubaroes e il loro cantante Ildo Lobo, Bulimundo o Finacon. From the traditional music to the oneiric one composed by the famous Vasco Martins, where the Capoverdean music reveals all its universality and tipicality. Cesaria was born in the town of Mindelo where still leaves. She successfully performes in numerous tournč around the world like in Sao Luis Theatre in Lisbon, the prestigious Olympia in Paris, Palau in Barcelona and many more exclusive places in Canada, Japan, Brazil, Belgium, Switzerland, transforming the music of Cabo Verde in a cult for intellectuals. MUSIC AND DANCE Morna, born by the fusion of African rhythms with the Portuguese fado, is the main expression of the Capoverdean soul. Traditionally played with acoustic guitar, covaquinho, (a small guitar with four strings) and violin, morna sings love, suffering, nostalgia of Capoverdean people. Coladeira, born by the fusion of the African and Brazilian music, is much more cheerful. The popular funanā, a traditional rhythm from the island of Santiago, is the expression of warmess and happiness with ingredients linked to zouk of Antilles. In the local festival in Santiago, you can listen to batuque and finacon, with sang speeches claps of hands and African percussions, belonging to the age of African slavery. Mazurca and contradanca, introduced in the islands in XIV century are still popular in Santo Antao and Sao Nicolau.
